SS 348H tubing, also known as UNS S34809 or AISI 348H, is an austenitic stainless steel alloy specifically designed for high-temperature applications. Compared to standard 300-series steels, it boasts improved creep strength and stability when exposed to elevated temperatures, making it ideal for use in boiler tubes, super-heaters, reheaters, and heat exchangers. This tubing can be produced either seamless or welded, adhering to established standards for high-temperature tubing.
On the chemical side, SS 348H contains about 17.0-19.0% chromium (Cr), 9.0-12.0% nickel (Ni), and a controlled carbon content of around 0.04-0.10%. It also includes stabilizing elements like niobium and titanium, which help manage grain growth at high temperatures. In its annealed state, this alloy demonstrates impressive mechanical properties: for instance, it has a tensile strength of at least 515 MPa (approximately 75 ksi), a yield strength of at least 205 MPa, and an elongation of at least 40%. The modulus of elasticity is roughly 200 GPa. Even at elevated temperatures, SS 348H maintains good strength; for example, at around 540 °C, the tensile strength may decrease to about 380 MPa. Its density ranges from 7.8 to 8.0 g/cm³. Thanks to its alloying and stabilizing elements, SS 348H shows excellent creep resistance and structural stability in high-temperature environments.
