254 SMO tubing is a super-austenitic stainless steel alloy designed for use in extremely harsh environments, particularly where chlorides, seawater, or high-stress conditions come into play. ([Alleima][1]) It’s recognized under standards like UNS S31254 and EN 1.4547. ([Alleima][1]) Thanks to its unique alloying, it boasts significantly better resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress-corrosion cracking compared to standard 300-series stainless steel. This alloy contains high levels of chromium (~19.5-20.5%), nickel (~17.5-18.5%), molybdenum (~6.0-6.5%), and nitrogen (~0.18-0.25%). ([silver-tubes.com][3]) It has a very low carbon content (≤ 0.02%) to boost its corrosion resistance. ([ashtapadoverseas.com][4]) In terms of mechanical properties, one supplier lists the tensile strength in the annealed state at around 690-830 MPa (approximately 100-120 ksi) with a minimum elongation of about 35%. ([elgiloy.com][5]) The typical yield strength is around 300 MPa or more. ([aesteiron.com][6]) Its density is roughly 8.0 g/cm³. ([elgiloy.com][5]) Notably, this alloy is recognized for its excellent weldability and formability, even with its high alloy content. ([pacstainless.com][2])
